QuTS hero is the operating system for high-end and enterprise QNAP NAS models. WIth Linux and ext4, QTS enables reliable storage for everyone with versatile value-added features and apps, such as snapshots, Plex media servers, and easy access of your personal cloud.

One disk on its own has no protection.QTS is the operating system for entry- and mid-level QNAP NAS. Could I set up the system with 3HDs? 1 for the photos and data, and the other two for the RAID? Any recommendations of HDs to put into the QNAP? No, use all disks in RAID 5 (1 disk protection) or RAID 6 (2 disk protection) (if you buy 4 bay). This will allow me to access the two imacs, and 2 iphones from in the house, and through the cloud outside of the house. That would mean, that my photos and data are stored on the HD, and I'll use the NAS as backup of the computers and separate HD. SO it sounds like the best is to go with a TS469L or TS451 (I'll check out both specs, thanks STORAGEMAN -though, don't have a ton of money.), and then use that as a RAID device, and have a separate HD for photos. The only thing is, I'd rather keep my data mine, and not actually ON the cloud.only accessible THROUGH the cloud.

I use for example Plex media server installed on my mac and PlexConnect configured on my Apple TV to access the movie library stored on the NAS.Įquitas wrote:Thanks XAVIERH, I'm glad to hear IOS 8 and OSX (Yosemite) will have an iclould drive availability.

as you saw on my post i use a combination of both cloud and NAS for storage and ther software components to stream movies both inside and outside my network. Could I set up the system with 3HDs? 1 for the photos and data, and the other two for the RAID? Any recommendations of HDs to put into the QNAP? as you can see from my signature i use Western Digital drives and i would recommend the RED Drives as they are designed for Home NAS devices.

let us know what else you need.Įquitas wrote:Thanks XAVIERH, I'm glad to hear IOS 8 and OSX (Yosemite) will have an iclould drive availability. be that an external drive or another qnap (which can become expensive). please do keep that in mind: you need to back it up to another device. having said that please remember that raid gives you reliability if one of the drives goes bad but it is still a single point of of failure, meaning if it dies (THe QNAP) and you do not have a backup, the information stored is gone). setting the qnap to do raid is simple enough and that is done once you are setting up the device. Regarding accessing the QNAP through the web that is simple by suing my qnap cloud and there are tutorials on the qnap site to do this. the questions would be how big are your libraries (pictures, documents) and see what icloud plan will work for you. so lets tackle all this: based on the latest apple info both IOS 8 and the upcoming version of OSX (Yosemite) will come with something called Icloud drive, whcih will work like dropbox. i use one of my NAS devices purely for timemachine backup and another one for file purposes and another to replicate the information on the file server and i use a cloud service call Crashplan. I do have several Deices which i use for different purposes though. (Only some models come with XBMC and HDMI ports). I personally chose the TS-470 Pro, in order to get XBMC Media Server on my NAS, so that I can watch my Movies/TV Shows directly on my TV via XBMC and the HDMI port on my NAS.

You can review the User Manuals prior to purchase if you want to check out capabilities.

(Dropbox is not available on Marvell/ARM-based models for example). I'd recommend an Intel-based model for maximum compatibility with 3rd party Apps such as Dropbox. I'd recommend a 4-Bay model to take advantage of RAID5. THUS.what system should I buy? Thanks, I'm really new to this. I might also get a surveillance system at home later.we've got the house wired on the outside for that, but no cameras, or storage. I would also like to be able to access my storage over the net - ie: over the cloud. I would also like to have safe storage - ie: one HD backing up another (RAID?).
